Local 'earmarks' run a stop sign (congressmen shuffle federal money to local companies despite ban)

Washington -- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi laid down the law this year: To prevent the appearance of Congress doing unethical favors for big campaign contributors, she told Democrats they could no longer steer federal money directly to corporations. The only "earmarks" members could seek in spending bills would be for nonprofits... But not everyone is obeying Pelosi’s tough talk... U.S. Reps. On Saturday, April 10, Yon posted a message on his magazine-style website. “[A] message came from military that this embed has ended.” He headed off to pack his bags.

Republican Congressional candidate Richard Hanna has raised more than $350,000 in the last eight weeks, his campaign said Saturday. Hanna, who is challenging incumbent Democrat Michael Arcuri in the 24th district, said in a press release that he was “humbled and grateful for the enormous support.” His campaign said 91 percent of the individual donations came from within the district, which includes the city of Geneva and parts of Ontario and Seneca counties. Complete first-quarter financials must be filed with the Federal Election Commission by Thursday, and Hanna’s campaign said specific figures would be available then. Arcuri spokesman Mark Cornell...
